Informal Algebra 2

Informal Algebra II includes the same topics of study included in Algebra II and places less emphasis on formal processes and rigor. While Informal Algebra II satisfies the third math course in the college-preparatory sequence, it is not recommended for stronger math students or students who want to pursue studies or careers in the quantitative or scientific fields.

GRADING:

Tests / Projects ...........................40%
       Quizzes .......................................30%
      CW / HW ....................................10%
    Final Exam / EOC .......................20%

Missing grades are counted as a “0” until made up.

Any assignment not turned in on the due date will lose 5 points for every day late.  This includes days that class does not meet; you can turn things in before and after school when they are late.

Quizzes may be announced, unannounced, or take-home.  In-class quizzes may not be made up - the related chapter test will replace that missing grade.

If you miss a test due to an excused absence then you have 1 week to make the test up, otherwise you will receive a Zero (0) for the test.

The final exam may not be exempted!

A Status report will be sent home several times during the semester.  It is to be signed by a parent or guardian and returned for a quiz grade. This quiz grade will not be replaced by any test grades.

EXTRA CREDIT:

Individual extra credit assignments are not given.  Bonus points, if offered, will be available throughout the semester to all students on an equal basis and will be related to the academic content of the course.

CLASSWORK/HOMEWORK:

Students are expected to be self-motivated.  Homework is due on the next day the class meets. You are expected to complete all assignments thoroughly.  All assignments are intended to prepare you for success.

WRITING JOURNAL:

Students will be asked to keep a writing journal.  This can be done in a spiral notebook or online in the form of a blog or wiki.  These last two things will be explained in class.  The journal will be students reflections on lessons.  They can write explaining the daily lesson to someone else or they can tell how the new concepts will effect them.  I will expect at least a paragraph and students need to use proper grammar and writing techniques they have learned in their English classes. Entries must be made after every class.  The notebooks can be left in the classroom.

ATTENDANCE/TARDIES:

Regular attendance is expected for success.  If you are absent, you will miss work that will not be re-taught upon your return.  It is your responsibility to copy all notes and complete all missed assignments.  You can get those assignments from the class blog or when you return to class.

The Tardy policy is posted in the classroom and will be followed.

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES:

Adhere to all student policies in Student Handbook.

Be in your seat and prepared to start when the bell rings.

Be prepared with completed assignments, textbook, paper, graph paper,

scientific calculator, notebook binder, and writing utensils every day.

Participate at all times.

Passes will be limited.  Each student has a limit of 6 bathroom passes a semester.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY:

All work is expected to be unique and completed by you.

Cheating is defined as, but not limited to:

§         talking during tests

§         using written notes of any form on tests/quizzes

§         copying another student’s work

§         copying answers from the back of the book

§         programming notes and/or formulas into a calculator for a test/quiz
