Algebra 1 Y

Algebra 1Y is the first course in the college preparatory sequence for mathematics. The fundamental ideas of variable, real number relationships, and problem solving are explored in theory and application. Course topics include classes of numbers, expressions, equations, inequalities, linear functions, polynomials, systems of equations, quadratic equations, rational expressions, radicals, and an introduction to probability and statistics.

Course Expecations


CONTENT:
Algebra I is an important study of the basics of Algebra.  Success with the material in this course is extremely important for success in ALL future math classes.  Class content is listed on the pacing guide.

TEXTBOOK:
            McDougal Littell Algebra I: Equations, Graphs, Applications
            Larson, Boswell, Kanold, Stiff www.mcdougallittell.com provides student help with extra examples, problem solving help, and more.  Reminders are found throughout the text.

SUPPLIES:  
One(1) Three(3) Ring Binder
Notebook paper
Pencil
Calculator (scientific, nothing fancy)

STUDY HALL / EXTRA HELP / TUTORING:

Monday and Tuesday 3:30 – 4:00
This is subject to change depending on the after school tutoring program hours

GRADING:            

     Tests / Projects ...........................40%
        Quizzes .......................................25%
        CW / HW ....................................15%
       Final Exam / EOC .......................20%

        Missing grades are counted as a “0” until made up. 

Any assignment not turned in on the due date will lose 5 points for every day late.  You can turn things in before and after school when they are late.

Quizzes may be announced, unannounced, or take-home.  In-class quizzes may not be made up - the related chapter test will replace that missing grade.

If you miss a test due to an excused absence then you have 1 week to make the test up, otherwise you will receive a Zero (0) for the test.

The final exam may not be exempted! 

A Status report will be sent home several times during the semester.  It is to be signed by a parent or guardian and returned for a quiz grade. This quiz grade will not be replaced by any test grades.


EXTRA CREDIT:

Individual extra credit assignments are not given.  Bonus points, if offered, will be available throughout the semester to all students on an equal basis and will be related to the academic content of the course. 

JOURNAL ENTRIES

            Students will beexpected tokeep a math journal.  This will be done either on paper or on the

class blog page.  The journal will be student reflections on lessons.  They can write explaining

the daily lesson to someone else or they can tell how the new concepts will effect them.  I will

expect at least a paragraph and students will need to use proper grammar and writing techniques

they have learned in their English classes.  The notebooks can be left in the classroom.

 

CLASSWORK/HOMEWORK:

Students are expected to be self-motivated.  Homework/classwork is due the next class period. Homework will not be collected on a daily basis.  You are expected to complete all assignments thoroughly.  All assignments are intended to prepare you for success.

 

 

ATTENDANCE/TARDIES:

Regular attendance is expected for success.  If you are absent, you will miss work that will not be re-taught upon your return.  It is your responsibility to copy all notes and complete all missed assignments. 

The Tardy policy is posted in the classroom and will be followed.

 

 

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES:

s         Adhere to all student policies in Student Handbook.

s         Be in your seat and prepared to start when the bell rings.

s         Be prepared with completed assignments, textbook, paper, graph paper,         
      scientific calculator, notebook binder, and writing utensils(preferable pencils)     

      every day.

s         Show respect to all people and property around you.

s         Participate at all times.

Passes will be limited.  Each student has a limit of 6 bathroom passes a semester. 

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY:

All work is expected to be unique and completed by you.  Cheating is defined as, but not limited to:
§         talking during tests
§         using written notes of any form on tests/quizzes
§         copying another student’s work
§         copying answers from the back of the book
§         programming notes and/or formulas into a calculator for a test/quiz
